Jhony’s ministry in India is adding a sewing center to train adolescent girls and young widows with a marketable skill.

Project: To provide a dedicated sewing machine center for adolescent girls and young widows to be trained in machine sewing, tailoring, machine embroidery, hand embroidery and fashion design.

Summary:

Due to religious taboos, feudalism and a male dominating society, illiteracy is a major factor that keeps young girls and women from developing marketable skills in Jhony’s community in India. Most of the people are laborers, and most are in debt to money lenders or shop keepers because they have accrued debts equal to many months of pay, which they cannot possibly repay on their subsistence incomes.

As part of a larger training effort of Zion Ministries, located in Bhongir, India, this project will provide training for women and girls in tailoring and sewing. Ten sewing machines will be purchased and shared by 30 women in each of two phases resulting in the training of 60 women. At the end of this project, these women will have marketable sewing and tailoring skills. Ten of the 60 women will be identified of the most needy and talented trainees and will be helped to set up a tailoring enterprise for self-sustenance and supporting other women.
